Arsen Kurbanov

Arsen was born in Makhachkala, Dagestan, in 1969 to artist parents. In 1988, he finished college, receiving a red diploma, which signifies a scholastic excellence. Kurbanov was immediately accepted at the Repin Institute in St. Petersburg, where he studied with the late Neprinstov. He graduated from the Repin in 1994. Kurbanov strives to combine the techniques of the old masters, Pieter de Hooch and Vermeer, with a sense of contemporary, personal taste of imagery. Biblical and historical references appear alongside modern elements in his paintings, often producing an atmosphere of mystery. Since graduation, Kurbanov has been painting in Russia and abroad. In 1993, the St. Petersburg House of Cinema featured his work in a solo exhibition. He has participated in Artists’ Union exhibitions in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Makhachkala. Twice Kurbanov has exhibited his work in the German cities of Hamburg and Berlin.
