I moved to Chattanooga, TN in September, 1992. My former spouse, and father of my children , Bob Powell, moved our family for his employment as chief corporate counsel with Signal Apparel Corporation. I have 2 children,

Erika Kaufman Powell Moon, married to Trey Moon, and Jack Kaufman Powell.

Both children were born in Rochester, NY, but spent all their early educational years in Chattanooga. They attended either Bright School, Montessori World of Children, St. Nicholas, Boyd Buchanan School or McCallie.

In the early childhood years, I volunteered with Bright, Montessori and St. Nicholas Schools. I taught art history lessons for several semesters at Montessori School. I was an involved parent in my daughter's volleyball, and my son's rock climbing competitions, as well as an active participant in the McCallie annual fund drives.

I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of Michigan in 1977 in The History of Art, with an emphasis on Museum Practices and Principles. Previously, I had worked at the Hermitage Museum in Norfolk, Virginia, my birthplace, and taken art history classes at Chatham College in Pittsburgh, PA, Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA, Carnegie Mellon University and The University of Pittsburgh. Intermittently, I worked as an apprentice to 2 ceramic artists near Yorktown, VA.

In 1977, I moved to Chicago and worked with an exclusive committee at The Art Institute of Chicago, cataloguing the museum's pre-1900 American Art Collection. I was assigned to research one painting by an obscure artist, proving provenance. This project lasted a year. Simultaneously, I maintained a pottery workshop.

A move to Greensboro, NC, in 1979, prompted my enrollment in The Housing and Interior Design program at The University of North Carolina in Greensboro. While attending college, I was actively involved in The University's Weatherspoon Art Gallery.

In 1984, I completed the 5 year Bachelor of Science program within 2 1/2 years, and was hired by VVKR, an architecture, engineering and design company in Alexandria, VA. My projects were mostly centered on the interior design of health care facilities. I have had experience with private interior design firms, large corporate office furniture sales, and free-lance interior design in the ensuing years.

In 1995, The Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga, hired me in the educational department to direct Summer Art Camps. I remained involved with the museum, training and volunteering as a docent. I served on a directorial board during that time, as well.

Since early 1990's, I served on the jurying committee for Ketner's Mill Fair, and worked with the exhibitors every year up to 2010. I had also served three non-consecutive years as a juror for the Athens Area Council for The Arts.

I have always continued to create my own art expressions, in a multitude of medium, paintings and drawings, shadow box compilations, graffiti photograph arrangements and found object or clay sculpture. In 2000, I was asked to exhibit at Local Color Gallery, in Nashville, TN. The same year, I was invited to join In-Town Art Gallery on Frazier Avenue, in Chattanooga. In the 7 years of membership of the co-operative gallery, I was vice- president twice, and served as the gallery designer. Gallery 1401 hired me in 2000. I worked with the art and patrons co-ordinating many wonderful art events.

I have been on the Sculpture Fields of Montague Park Board of Trustees since 2014, acting as Chairwoman of The Board from 2019-2021.

I am married to Van Jernigan and inherited two more lovely children, BV and Allie.
