I am a color field abstractionist. The work has become more minimalist/reductive over the years. Often, the basis of a work has a “chassis”: landscape, seascape, architectural etc. The colors and the abstraction will be built around that chassis, but at times the work is a total abstraction with no distinct topic or theme, that final element to be supplied by the viewer.
There are also a very small number of figurative works, and works on paper.
The laying on of color is accomplished almost totally with knives. Wide brushes may be used after the paint has been applied to supply a blending or patina to the work. Many works are achieved through the laying on of color and then the almost total removal to achieve the delicate hue left in the canvas itself.
My favorite artists are: Mark Rothko, Richard Diebenkorn, Giorgio Morandi, Egon Schiele, and Phillip Guston (his abstractions), and usually the favoritism centers on questions of stroke or palette. I also adore the work of Alice Neel.
I am native of a small village in the upper Hudson Valley, bordered by the Catskill’s to the west and the Berkshires to the east. The tone of the area is very New England, and the ambient yellow, pink light is extremely inspiring.
My mother was a regional portrait artist, my uncle a museum curator so the impetus to paint must be genetic.
My background is as a Fortune 300 executive with a brief late-career stint as Director of Executive Education at RPI’s Lally School of Management.
